I'm a Librarian...
Of course I know
a lot about books, but I also have to be good at technology and the
Internet, because that’s where information is these days. I enjoy
helping our patrons use the library, but there are days I feel more
like a social worker, a babysitter, a cop, or a concierge. In
our school or community library, funding is always a problem.
And there's always the bureaucracy...
But I love helping people find that one book or article they really need so they can finish a project or paper. I like being creative in developing programs for the library.
How can Sherlock Holmes help get my patrons interested in my library?
As a librarian, you're like The Great Detective yourself sometimes. Sherlock Holmes fans are an interesting group. You might enjoy meeting some Sherlockians.
And in case anyone asks, there are many libraries with special collections devoted to Arthur Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes. In fact, a brochure for an exhibition on Sherlock Holmes and the Law even suggested that Holmes could have been a "born librarian."
Sherlock Holmes societies like getting young people into reading books. We can help you with:
- Sherlockian Book Drives
- Writing Contests
- A Sherlock Holmes Detective Class for readers 7-12
- Reviews of Sherlockian Books for Young People by Wayne Scott
- Sherlockian Performances
- A visit with Sherlock Holmes
- A play by a Sherlockian society
- A Holmes story reader
- A Sherlock Holmes exhibit for the Library
- Did we mention that Sherlockians have collections of all kinds of things?
- Holmes’ Birthday is celebrated on Jan 6, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's is May 22
